Saquon Barkley returned to the Philadelphia Eagles lineup on Monday night, playing through a hamstring issue and a new back strain during a 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The running back told reporters that his hamstring felt "great," suggesting the injury that sidelined him for the previous two weeks has healed sufficiently for him to play.

Barkley touched the ball on all nine of his offensive snaps. He finished the game with 62 rushing yards on seven carries and a touchdown, along with two receptions for nine yards. This performance made him the first NFL starter in the past 20 seasons to play at least nine offensive snaps and receive a touch on every single one.

The Eagles coach, Nick Sirianni, confirmed that the medical staff cleared Barkley to play, though the team monitored him closely. Sirianni noted that Barkley is "tough as heck" and likely would have played every down if not for the coaching staff's management of his workload. The head coach emphasized that player health was the primary concern when making the decision to activate him.

Barkley managed the pain visibly during the game. He tweaked his back on a 29-yard run in the first quarter, which he said worsened as the contest progressed. He spent time in the medical tent and stretched with trainers on the sideline. Immediately after scoring on an 8-yard run on the first possession, he moved quickly to an exercise bike on the sideline.

His last snap of the game occurred in the third quarter. Barkley stated he does not believe the back issue will keep him out long-term, though he deferred to the training staff for a final assessment. He described his mindset as one of pushing his body to the limit because he loves the game, acknowledging that it is difficult to lead when he cannot perform at his best.

The Eagles have suffered heavy losses at the running back position. Will Shipley, Tank Bigsby, and Carson Steele are on injured reserve due to foot, abdomen, and shoulder injuries, respectively. Dameon Pierce exited the game in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury, leaving the running duties to Elijah Mitchell, who was brought up from the practice squad for the contest.

The Eagles' limited use of Barkley reflected their strategy to protect him from further damage. Despite the loss, the running back's efficiency provided a clear signal that he is returning to form. The team will now evaluate his back condition before his next appearance.
