Kylian Mbappe scored his 100th career goal for Real Madrid on Sunday night, a milestone that coincided with a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou. The French forward found the net twice in the match, which concluded the first El Clasico of the 2026-27 season.

Real Madrid entered the game as underdogs against a Barcelona side that had won its first nine league matches of the season. Jose Mourinho’s team, however, secured three points to end the Catalan club’s perfect record in the top flight. This result marked the first time any team had defeated Barcelona in La Liga this year.

The win also snapped a broader streak of form for Barcelona. Hansi Flick’s side had suffered a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League just days earlier, making Sunday the second consecutive loss for the home club. For Real Madrid, the result provided immediate psychological relief after earlier season stumbles.

Mbappe’s two goals raised his season total to 14, placing him as the second-highest scorer in La Liga. He reached the 100-goal mark for Real Madrid across all competitions since his transfer from PSG in 2024. The 27-year-old forward is currently considered a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or, an award set to be presented in London on Monday.

The match shifted the all-time head-to-head record in favor of the visitors. Real Madrid now holds 107 victories in the El Clasico rivalry, surpassing Barcelona’s total of 106. This narrow lead reflects the long-standing intensity of the fixture, though the historical balance remains tight.

In the league standings, Real Madrid sits in third place with 24 points after 10 matches. Barcelona leads the table, while Atletico Madrid occupies second place with 25 points. The three-point gap between first and third suggests a competitive race is developing with just over a quarter of the season completed.

Jose Mourinho returned to the manager’s seat for Real Madrid following two trophy-less seasons for the club. He has won five consecutive matches since taking charge, including three in La Liga and two in the Champions League. His tactical approach appears to have stabilized a squad that struggled against Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month.

Despite the victory, Mourinho emphasized the long-term nature of the league campaign. “If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn’t playing to win at the Camp Nou,” the 63-year-old coach said after the final whistle. “They’re playing to win the championship.”

Mourinho celebrated the win with his characteristic knee slide on the pitch. The result serves as a benchmark for his tenure, offering evidence that his methods can compete with Barcelona’s recent dominance in Spanish football.
